Personality:

He's two-faced, which means that he has two personalities. One is a facade that he uses to gain compliments and praise from those around him, and the other one is what he's truly like. Of course, since he's still one person, his fake and true personalities have shared traits.

To appeal to those around him, he prefers to play the usual cutesy type of person. If asked to do anything by people he would most likely agree to it, since being helpful would most likely add cuteness points.

When he finds a person he's fond of, he tends to cling to them. Literally. He will cling onto their arm wherever they go. Try thinking of a koala, and imagine that koala as a short, orange-haired boy. That's basically it.

He always has a smile ready for those around him! He feels as if this will attract more people to him, and that more people would find him cute like this.

If he gets teased or complimented, he will get flustered. If you tease him too much, or if you call him something he doesn't like [ex: butt, some cuss word], he'll start crying. He's easily calmed down, at least.

All of the characteristics in his true personality tie in with the fact that he's very insecure.

In reality, Aji is far from the sweet, kind person he wants everyone to think he is. He wants adoration and love from basically anyone, and can go to extreme lengths to get just that. He coouldn't care less about other peoples' personalities and backgrounds as long as they think he's cute.

Those characteristics tie in with his insecurity due to the fact that he lives off the love he gets from other people. Basically, he needs love and adoration to survive.

There are two traits that were carried over from his true personality to his fake one, these being the fact that he's Clingy and Easily Flustered.

Although he's received many of them, compliments fluster him. This is due to the fact that his insecurity makes him think badly of himself.

His clingyness is also directly connected to his insecurity, except this is not limited to only being physically clingy. He tends to cling to his friends and loved ones, or even anybody who tells him that he's cute or that they love him. He cannot love himself, so clinging onto people will help him attain the adoration and love he so desperately needs.

TL;DR: Aji's really insecure and this fricks him over a lot.

History:

As a child, he had no extreme interest in swimming. Swimming was only a summer recreational hobby for him, and refused to pursue it further when urged by his parents. He wasn't very fond of it either, seeing that swimming in the chlorine-filled pools only cools him down for so long, and not only that, it ruins his hair which he works very hard to keep fluffy, smooth and perfect.

To him, his looks mattered more than anything else. This happened all because his beloved older sister had told him something before that stuck with him to this very day.

"Wow, Aji! You're so cute! I'd love you forever if you stay cute forever!~"

They were young at the time, and she had no idea what kind of effect these words had on him. At first, he passed this off as something that wasn't serious. But as days passed, he began fearing that she meant what she said. From then on, he decided to pay attention to his looks. Personality came second, and his talents, third. He couldn't risk not being cute, not if it meant his older sister wouldn't love him.

He loved his sister very much. They spent most of their time together, especially when he was a child. As they grew older his sister developed numerous interests, which included swimming. She loved swimming very much, and took her training seriously. Soon enough, all she could talk about was things related to swimming.

Due to this, Aji could no longer relate to his beloved sister. He panicked, since he wanted to be as close to her as he possibly could. He decided to get into swimming as well, and began training to be the best he could possibly be. He and his sister grew even closer than before because of this, since they now have another shared interest.

His sister had heard about the school, and recommended him to go. He was reluctant at first, since that meant he would live in a dorm, and away from her, but caved in due to her urging. Without his sister around, his motivation for doing well has lessened, of course, and he had returned to his staying cute mentality, in hopes of finding another person at the school to have as a replacement for his older sister.
